An Australian mother is under investigation for alleged cannibalism following the discovery of her 4-year-old son's body with a mutilated arm. The 32-year-old woman appeared at a police station in Wyong, north of Sydney, on Saturday, prompting officers to conduct a welfare check at her residence.
Authorities found the young boy deceased at the home. First responders described the scene as extremely confronting and requiring support services. Police are investigating the possibility of cannibalism based on discussions with the mother, who has not been publicly identified. The child may have been deceased for several days, according to reports.
Superintendent Chad Gillies of Tuggerah Lakes Police stated at a press conference on Sunday that the child had confirmed injuries, but he declined to speculate further on their nature. The mother was arrested at the police station and subsequently charged with murder and domestic violence offenses. Her vehicle and other evidence were seized by police.
The incident has shaken the Wyong community, where neighbors reported no prior indications of distress. One neighbor, who had previously worked on the mother's car, recalled the boy as energetic and happy. Another neighbor indicated that the mother and son had recently moved into the rental home following an alleged domestic violence incident with a former partner.
The mother was denied bail after failing to appear in court on Sunday and is scheduled to return to court in Wyong on September 1.
