Australian Man Charged in Thailand with Murder of Teen Girl

An Australian man, Simon Peter Carman, has appeared in a Thai court for the first time, facing charges of murder and concealment of a body in connection with the death of a 17-year-old girl in Pattaya City.

Carman was indicted by prosecutors Thursday on the charges, according to Pattaya City Police. He also faces two counts of indecent acts on a minor. He made an appearance at the Pattaya Provincial Court to give a statement in response to the indictment, and authorities are awaiting the court's decision on whether to proceed to trial.

Carman was arrested in June after the girl was reported missing. A suitcase containing her body was found shortly thereafter in Pattaya, a tourist city located approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) southeast of Bangkok. He was apprehended at a Bangkok airport as he attempted to board a flight to Australia.

Police stated that security footage showed the girl last entering a condominium with Carman. He was later seen leaving the building alone with a large suitcase, which he loaded onto a motorbike and transported to a deserted area along the railway. Subsequent questioning by police led to the discovery of the suitcase containing the girl's body.

In a police interrogation video shared by Thai media, Carman claimed he acted in self-defense, stating the girl had threatened him with a knife. He has denied all charges and is currently detained at the Pattaya Remand Prison.

If convicted of premeditated murder, Carman could face the death penalty.
