An Australian man has been arrested in Thailand in connection with the alleged murder of a 17-year-old girl whose body was discovered stuffed inside a suitcase. Simon Carman, 46, from Ballarat, Victoria, was apprehended at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok while attempting to board a plane.

Police allege Tunchanok Donhomla was last seen entering a hotel in the coastal city of Pattaya with Carman shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Thursday. CCTV footage reportedly shows the teenager holding hands with the man believed to be Carman. Her friends reported her missing on Friday afternoon after they had not heard from her.

Officers searching a hotel room connected to the incident reported finding blood on the floor. Later that evening, Ms. Tunchanok's body was found naked inside a black suitcase near railway tracks approximately 10 minutes from the hotel. Authorities stated that Carman's arms and neck bore scratch marks, which they believe are consistent with a struggle.

Carman has denied allegations of murder, telling reporters he does not know how Ms. Tunchanok died. He claimed she disappeared from the hotel room while he was asleep and suggested the scratches on his body were from a spider.

Investigators allege that CCTV footage shows Carman leaving the hotel on Thursday evening with a suitcase matching the description of the one found containing the teenager's body. Further surveillance footage purportedly depicts him transporting the suitcase on the back of a motorcycle.

Authorities have initially charged Carman with taking a minor for the purpose of committing an indecent act. He is currently being questioned on suspicion of murder. If convicted of murder, the maximum penalty in Thailand is death, though such sentences are rarely carried out.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it is providing consular assistance to an Australian citizen detained in Thailand, citing privacy obligations for not providing further comment. Consular assistance typically includes welfare checks, liaison with local authorities, and providing lists of local legal representation.

In a shocking discovery, Ms Tunchanok's naked body was found in a 26-inch black suitcase beside a railway line about 10 minutes from the hotel at 11pm on Friday
