An Australian-Jewish couple reported being subjected to a severe antisemitic verbal attack by an Irish tourist while shopping in southeastern France earlier this month. The incident, captured on video by the couple, allegedly began when the tourist, identified as 'Paddy,' approached them to discuss a French football jersey worn by the husband.

The situation escalated when the wife explained her husband would not wear an Irish jersey due to the Irish government's "anti-Israel policies." According to the couple, the man then responded with an antisemitic remark and a direct threat. "We all agree with that. And I'm sorry Hitler didn't finish the job!" the man allegedly said, before adding, "You get the f*** away before I put a fing bullet in your head. You fing pigs, f*** off."

The video of the confrontation was shared online by the Australian Jewish Association (AJA). AJA President Robert Gregory stated that the couple were "understandably shaken" by the ordeal and emphasized the need for authorities to investigate the matter urgently. Gregory also noted that while antisemitism is a growing concern in Australia, this incident serves as a reminder that Jewish travelers can be targeted anywhere.

French officials have condemned the incident. Aurore Bergé, France's minister for gender equality and the fight against discrimination, described the video as showing a "chilling and unacceptable level of violence" and reiterated France's commitment to combating antisemitism. Serge Papin, the Minister for Small and Medium Enterprises, stated that France is a welcoming country and no tourist should face threats or discrimination based on their identity or beliefs.

The couple, who were on vacation in France, stated that the man's demeanor changed rapidly from friendly banter to aggression. The husband initially engaged in lighthearted conversation about football with the tourist, who had approached them upon hearing them speak English. The interaction turned hostile after the wife provided the political reason for her husband's jersey choice.

It remains unconfirmed whether French police have launched a formal investigation into the incident. Representatives for French law enforcement have been contacted for comment.
