Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has scrapped the controversial plan to sell the historic Victoria Barracks, opting to keep the site in public hands.

The decision comes after significant public backlash, including opposition from former prime ministers Tony Abbott, Paul Keating, and John Howard.

Victoria Barracks was part of a larger initiative to sell approximately 67 Defence sites, a plan estimated to generate $1.8 billion. However, it is now among four sites that will be retained by the government.
