Erin Patterson, convicted of murdering three relatives and attempting to murder another by poisoning them with death cap mushrooms, has appealed her conviction. Her legal team argued in a hearing on Wednesday that a "catastrophic" hotel mix-up compromised the trial.

Patterson is currently serving a life sentence for the 2023 incident at her Victoria home, where she served her relatives a beef Wellington containing the poisonous mushrooms. She has consistently maintained that the deaths were accidental.

During the appeal hearing, Patterson's lawyers contended that the jury was housed in the same hotel as some prosecutors and a key witness. They also argued that certain evidence presented during the trial was overly speculative and that crucial evidence supporting the defense was wrongly excluded.
