Australian officials and the families of two teenagers who died from methanol poisoning in Laos have criticized the anticipated charges against those allegedly responsible for their deaths. Australian tourists Bianca Jones and Holly Morton-Bowles, both 19, were among six foreigners who died in November 2024 after consuming tainted alcohol at a tourist hostel in Vang Vieng.

The parents of the Australian victims stated that Lao authorities were expected to announce charges on Friday against the alleged suppliers of the methanol-laced drinks. According to information received by the families, the penalties for those convicted could include up to a year in jail and a fine of approximately 1,600 Australian dollars ($1,117).

Mark Jones, Bianca’s father, described the potential penalties as “unacceptable,” with Bianca’s mother, Michelle, expressing devastation and a feeling that her daughter's life “didn’t even matter.” Shaun Bowles, Holly Morton-Bowles' father, called the anticipated legal development “mind-boggling,” given Laos' popularity as a tourist destination.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed frustration and disappointment that authorities were not pursuing more serious charges. Wong’s office did not immediately provide details on the expected counts, and her statement did not specify the number of people to be charged. To convey the Australian government's objections and expectations for justice, an envoy was dispatched to Laos, and the country's ambassador to Canberra was summoned.

The incident occurred at the Nana Backpacker Hostel, where the two Australian women reportedly consumed "free shots" of Laotian vodka. They were found ill in their room and later evacuated to hospitals in neighboring Thailand, where they died. The other victims included an American man, a British woman, and two Danish women.

Methanol poisoning is a global issue, particularly in countries where alcoholic beverages are unaffordable or illicit. It can occur when methanol, a cheaper alternative to ethanol, is added to drinks at disreputable bars or is a byproduct of poorly distilled liquor. The consequences can range from severe poisoning to death.

Laos, one of Southeast Asia's least developed nations, is a popular tourist destination, with Vang Vieng attracting backpackers for its party scene and adventure sports. The families of the deceased have suggested that the Lao authorities' handling of the case may lead potential visitors to reconsider travel to the country.
