At least 10 people were killed and approximately 10 others injured in a massive highway pileup in Mexico's western state of Jalisco on Sunday. Four American citizens sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital.
The crash occurred when a tractor-trailer reportedly suffered a brake failure and collided with multiple vehicles that were stopped on the highway connecting Guadalajara and Tepic due to an earlier incident. The initial accident involved a rear-end collision between two tractor-trailers. A third tractor-trailer then crashed into the scene as emergency crews responded.
The impact resulted in a fire that destroyed three private vehicles and two tractor-trailer trucks. Two additional private vehicles and a National Guard unit also sustained damage. Videos from the scene showed several vehicles engulfed in flames, with plumes of black smoke rising into the air.
Jalisco Civil Protection reported that the four injured Americans were taken to Arboledas Hospital in Guadalajara. Among the fatalities, two were reportedly minors. Two National Guard members also suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized.
Authorities detained the driver of the tractor-trailer involved in the chain-reaction crash. Firefighters extinguished the blaze following the incident.
