A 12-year-old American boy was hospitalized after being attacked by a shark while swimming in the Exuma Cays, an archipelago in the Bahamas. The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed the incident, and the boy is reported to be in stable condition.

The attack occurred on Tuesday as the boy was swimming off the coast of Staniel Cay island. Authorities have not specified the species of shark involved.

He was transported by boat to New Providence, the most populous island in The Bahamas and home to its capital, Nassau, for medical treatment. This marks the second unprovoked shark attack recorded in Bahamian waters in 2026. Last March, an Australian woman sustained severe injuries to her right arm in an attack near Andros Island. In 2025, five unprovoked shark attacks were documented in the country's waters, according to the Global Shark Attack File.
