The trial of Alan Jones, a retired Sydney radio broadcaster and former Australian national rugby coach, commenced Monday, with the 85-year-old facing 22 charges related to alleged sexual offenses against six men and boys over a 20-year period.
Jones has pleaded not guilty to 20 counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual touching without consent. The alleged offenses occurred between 2003 and 2020 at various locations in Sydney and at his farm in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. The trial is anticipated to hear testimony from over 70 witnesses and is expected to last for several months.
Jones elected to have his case heard by Judge Glenn Walsh without a jury. The identities of the complainants are protected for legal reasons. Prosecutor Georgina Wright stated in her opening address that one complainant was approximately 16 years old and a developing sports figure when he first encountered Jones. Wright alleged that Jones committed nine offenses against this individual, including non-consensual kissing and touching of genitals while the complainant was driving.
Another complainant, who was 21 and worked on Jones' radio program, is expected to testify that Jones referred to him as "darling" and groped him while driving. Jones has consistently denied these allegations since his arrest in 2024, previously stating, "These allegations are either baseless or they distort the truth."
Jones had a prominent career, hosting a popular Sydney breakfast radio show for nearly two decades and was considered a powerful figure in Australian media. He also had a successful tenure coaching the Australian national rugby team, the Wallabies, from early 1984 for four years, during which the team achieved 86 wins in 102 matches.
His influence extended to conservative politics, having served as a speechwriter for Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, who was in power from 1975 to 1983. A police strike force was established to investigate Jones following a 2023 report in The Sydney Morning Herald alleging he used his positions of power as a schoolteacher and broadcaster to prey on young men.
