Africa CDC Convenes Emergency Meeting as Ebola Spreads
Health ministers from across the continent will gather virtually to strengthen the collective response to a growing Ebola outbreak.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has called an emergency virtual meeting for health ministers to address the escalating Ebola crisis across the continent. The meeting, scheduled for October 28, aims to bolster the collective response to the virus's spread.
Nigeria reported its first Ebola case on Tuesday, linked to a traveler who recently arrived from Uganda. This marks a significant development in the ongoing outbreak. Authorities in Nigeria are currently tracing 44 contacts associated with this case.
Uganda, which had previously declared itself Ebola-free in July after recording 20 cases, has refuted claims that Nigeria's latest case originated there. The outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo virus, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment. This strain has also been detected in France.
This outbreak was first identified in the Democratic Republic of Congo in May and has since spread rapidly. The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that this is the fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak in history, infecting over 9,500 people and causing nearly 4,500 deaths. The WHO has advised countries in the region to maintain a high level of preparedness as the situation in the DRC continues to evolve.
Ebola is now affecting three distinct regions in Africa, prompting Dr. Jean Kaseya, director general of the Africa CDC, to emphasize the need for "urgent action and political leadership at the highest level."
In some areas of the DRC, including North Kivu, health officials describe the disease as being out of control. A significant number of deaths are occurring within communities, and contact tracing efforts are struggling to keep pace with the virus's proliferation. Nigeria and Kenya, which has recorded nine cases, are among the latest countries to report cases linked to travelers who transited through Uganda.
