Afghanistan Sees Sharp Rise in Poppy Cultivation Despite Taliban Ban, UN Reports

Poppy cultivation and opium production in Afghanistan have increased sharply over the past year, marking the first significant rise since the Taliban government imposed a ban on narcotics in 2022, according to a report from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The agency cited deepening poverty as a primary driver, pushing some farmers to cultivate opium clandestinely to sustain their families.

Afghanistan, once the world's largest opium producer, saw cultivation surge to more than 43,000 hectares (106,000 acres) in 2026, a substantial increase from 10,000 hectares (24,700 acres) in the previous year. Opium production also rose by 400% over the same period. Farmers have reportedly resorted to concealing small poppy plots within cereal fields or walled compounds to evade detection.

"The fourfold increase in opium poppy cultivation shows the difficulty in sustaining decreases in illicit opium cultivation when poor farmers have no alternatives to feed their families," stated UNODC Executive Director Ghada Waly. She emphasized the need for collaboration between the Taliban authorities and the international community to support farming communities through investments in livelihoods, infrastructure, and market access.

While cultivation and production levels remain below those prior to the 2022 ban, the recent increase is the highest recorded since the ban took effect. The UNODC noted that it is too early to determine if this rise is temporary or indicative of a broader resurgence in illicit crop cultivation.

Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi has described the fight against narcotics as a significant achievement of his administration. However, he also acknowledged the international community's role in managing the drug issue, stating that an effective fight is a shared responsibility. Muttaqi called for support in providing alternative livelihoods for farmers, treating addiction, and strengthening regional and international cooperation against drug-trafficking networks.
