Patrick Orren Stephenson, the 24-year-old man accused of killing Samantha Murphy, has been returned to jail after an apparent suicide attempt at Melbourne Assessment Prison. Stephenson reportedly undertook the act on Friday, August 14, and was taken to a hospital for medical assessment before staff returned him to the facility later that evening, according to reports.

Stephenson is accused of murdering Ms. Murphy, a 51-year-old mother, who disappeared on February 4, 2024, while on a run near her home in Ballarat, Victoria. Her family reported her missing later that day after she failed to attend a scheduled brunch. Stephenson was charged with murder one month after Ms. Murphy vanished and has pleaded not guilty. He awaits trial.

Stephenson is the son of former Australian Football League player Orren Stephenson. Extensive searches for Ms. Murphy's remains have been conducted, with significant focus on areas including Enfield State Park, Canadian Forest, and Buninyong Bushland Reserve. None of Ms. Murphy's remains have been located. In May 2024, her credit cards, driver's license, and iPhone were found in mud at the bottom of a dam in Buninyong.

Ms. Murphy's disappearance prompted an outpouring of grief in the Ballarat community and across the nation, with many volunteers joining search efforts. Detective Inspector Dave Dunstan stated in 2025 that police had been working diligently to find her remains. He emphasized the importance of returning Ms. Murphy to her family and reaffirmed the commitment of the Missing Persons Squad to locating her, believing it is still possible. Searches were planned to continue in the Ballarat area throughout 2025, utilizing intelligence from various sources.
