Abby Choi's Ex-Husband, In-Laws Stand Trial for Hong Kong Socialite's Murder

The trial for the former husband and in-laws of Hong Kong socialite Abby Choi commenced Monday, over three years after the gruesome discovery of parts of her dismembered body shocked the city. Choi's ex-husband, Alex Kwong, his father, Kwong Kau, and his brother, Anthony Kwong, are accused of murdering Choi in February 2023. If convicted of murder, they face a potential life sentence. They have also been charged with obstructing the lawful burial of a body.

Choi, 28, was known for sharing her affluent lifestyle, complete with photo shoots and fashion events, on Instagram. Just days before her death, she had posted about attending a Dior show at Paris Fashion Week. The case has transfixed many in Hong Kong, an Asian financial hub where violent crime is uncommon. On Monday, dozens of individuals gathered outside the courthouse, awaiting the hearing, and a live broadcast was arranged for public viewing.

All three defendants appeared in court wearing masks and displayed a calm demeanor. Kwong Kau was dressed in a white T-shirt, while his sons wore suits. Investigators in 2023 reported finding body parts within a residence in Tai Po, a suburban district of Hong Kong. Subsequent searches were conducted at a landfill for additional evidence.

Choi had two children with Alex Kwong. Following their divorce, she remarried and had two younger children with her second husband. The prosecution is expected to present its case at a later date. The jury trial is anticipated to run for 45 days.
