Nine Americans have been safely evacuated from Nepal, but 85 remain missing following devastating floods that have claimed at least 750 lives, the U.S. State Department announced Sunday.
Rescue teams are engaged in around-the-clock efforts at the Nepali-Tibetan border to locate over 3,000 missing individuals in the aftermath of last week's catastrophic flooding. State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott stated that while nine Americans have been safely evacuated, the department is currently unaware of any U.S. citizen deaths.
The State Department has been collaborating with U.S. embassies in Tibet and China to coordinate rescue operations. However, the remote location where the disaster occurred presents significant logistical challenges for search teams.
"Our embassies in Beijing and Kathmandu are working 24/7 in terms of communicating and coordinating with local officials, trying to get that reliable information," Pigott said.
The disaster struck near the Rasuwagadhi border post, where a landslide triggered severe flooding that submerged entire villages. Among the missing Americans are individuals who were in Nepal for a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, a sacred site for Hindus and Buddhists, where thousands had gathered prior to the flood.

The State Department has allocated $3.6 million in emergency humanitarian assistance to the region. This funding is intended to support 10,000 affected households and aid in the reconstruction of destroyed roads.
