A 70-year-old man was fatally stabbed inside a multi-family home in Canarsie early Monday after an apparent dispute with a much-younger neighbor, police and law-enforcement sources said.

Authorities identified the victim as Fredrick Howard and the suspect as 31-year-old Josny Jean. Police said Howard suffered eight stab wounds to the chest and went to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center by private means; hospital staff called police at about 1:10 a.m. Howard died of his injuries less than an hour later, authorities said. Jean was arrested Monday night and charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

The incident occurred at a multi-family residence on East 87th Street near Avenue M in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, according to law-enforcement sources. Both men lived at the same address, though police did not immediately say whether they shared an apartment. Officers and homicide detectives are conducting an active investigation into the circumstances of the clash.

Authorities said the fatal confrontation stemmed from an ongoing dispute between the two men, but the exact nature or origin of that dispute had not been determined publicly. Police did not provide additional details on whether either man had a prior history of complaints or arrests related to one another.

Interior scene related to the investigation

Investigators have not said if there were witnesses to the stabbing inside the home or elsewhere in the building. NYPD protocols typically include canvassing the scene, interviewing residents and reviewing any available surveillance footage; police said only that detectives were looking into the case.

The suspect remained in custody after his Monday-night arrest, and prosecutors had filed charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon, police said. Court records and statements from the district attorney’s office were not immediately available, and no arraignment details were released by police at the time of the announcement.

Canarsie is a largely residential neighborhood in southeastern Brooklyn, where multigenerational and multi-family housing is common. Fatal domestic or neighbor-related stabbings remain relatively rare but continue to prompt inquiries into building safety, dispute resolution and access to social services for residents with ongoing conflicts.

Police asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the NYPD. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities said they would release further details as they are confirmed.
