22 Killed in Kenya Bus Crash
At least 22 people died when a bus collided with a truck on a major Kenyan highway, three weeks after a similar crash killed 17 along the same route.
A bus collided with a truck on Kenya's main highway on Sunday, killing at least 22 people, police reported. Several others sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.
The passengers were reportedly traveling back from a funeral when the accident occurred on the highway that connects the capital city, Nairobi, to the coastal city of Mombasa. Makueni County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif stated that the number of fatalities could increase.
This incident follows a fatal crash three weeks prior, where 17 individuals lost their lives along the same highway. The circumstances of Sunday's collision are not yet clear, though speeding and poor road conditions have been identified as common contributing factors in Kenyan road accidents.
The stretch of highway where the crash happened is known as an "accident black spot," according to Kenya’s National Transport and Safety Authority. Recommendations have previously been made to address safety concerns in the area.
