A 17-year-old girl has been identified as the victim of a fatal sword attack at the Brinell School in Fagersta, Sweden. An 18-year-old male suspect, who is also a student at the school, was arrested at the scene. The attack occurred on Friday while classes were in session, resulting in one fatality and three injuries.
Police stated that the suspect was apprehended after they fired shots, though the attacker was not hit. The case is currently being investigated as murder and attempted murder, and authorities have indicated no reason to believe additional perpetrators were involved. Two of the injured, both boys aged 12 and 17, sustained severe wounds. A third individual, also under 18, suffered minor injuries and has since been released from the hospital.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson visited a makeshift memorial on Saturday, expressing solidarity with the affected families and those impacted by previous school attacks in the country. "What must never happen has happened again," Kristersson stated. He was joined by Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Social Democratic Party. In light of the attack and with Sweden's parliamentary election scheduled for September, political parties have suspended campaign events. Kristersson has also convened a meeting with all party leaders to discuss the ongoing investigation.
No official information regarding the suspect's motive has been released. Investigators have conducted house searches and anticipate interviewing numerous witnesses. The region, which had entered a state of emergency on Friday, has since returned to normal.
This incident follows a series of violent attacks in Swedish schools. In 2025, an attack at an education center in Örebro resulted in 11 deaths, prompting discussions about stricter gun laws. In 2022, two teachers were killed by an 18-year-old attacker wielding a knife and an ax in Malmo. In 2015, a fatal rampage at a school in Trollhattan, described as a racist hate crime, led to three deaths before the perpetrator was killed by police.
