17 Prisoners Recaptured After Audacious Jailbreak in India
A fake medical emergency triggered the escape of 17 inmates, who were apprehended within 36 hours following a widespread search operation.
Seventeen prisoners have been recaptured in India's Tamil Nadu state after a daring jailbreak that began with a staged medical emergency and concluded with a 36-hour search operation. The incident has also brought renewed attention to overcrowding in Indian prisons.
The escape occurred Monday night from a prison in Theni district. The facility was holding 334 inmates, significantly exceeding its capacity of 200, according to police.
Authorities reported that the escape began around 10:30 p.m. local time when one prisoner feigned a seizure. As other inmates called for help, jail officials responded and were overpowered. The prisoners then reportedly attacked two other guards, seized keys, and used them to unlock the main gate. While 17 men fled, one returned to the prison shortly after.
Nine prison staff members have been suspended for alleged negligence. Police are also investigating the possibility of collusion between some prison officials and the escaped inmates. The Director General of Police for Prisons in Tamil Nadu, Sandeep Rathore, described the incident as a result of "human error" and a "clear breach of security protocol."
At the time of the escape, only four guards were on duty, a number far below the recommended staffing levels for the prison's inmate population.
A large-scale manhunt was launched, involving forces from across the state. The search employed advanced technology, including drone surveillance and CCTV footage analysis, alongside the efforts of police personnel.
Prisoners were apprehended in batches across nearby villages. Some were found at a bus station, while others were caught in tuk-tuks. Drone surveillance aided in locating eight men in a forest area near the prison. The final two recaptured men surrendered on Wednesday. All 17 are reported to have been transferred to high-security correctional facilities.
Following the incident, Rathore stated that all prisons across Tamil Nadu would undergo audits to ensure compliance with regulations.
The jailbreak has reignited discussions about prison conditions in India. The 2023 Prison Statistics India report indicated a national occupancy rate of 120.1%. Undertrial prisoners, who are awaiting trial or investigation, constitute over 73% of the total prison population, a situation that human rights groups and legal experts have cited as a cause for concern due to prolonged detention periods.
