Six people have died and 15 others were wounded in a shooting at a school in Thailand's Nonthaburi province, northwest of Bangkok. The perpetrator, a 14-year-old student, opened fire inside the Debsirin Nonthaburi School, according to Royal Thai Police spokesperson Trairong Piwpan. The student reportedly remained within the school premises after the shooting began.
Sources at the scene indicated the suspect was observed reloading ammunition within the building. Deputy interior minister Polapee Suwunchwee stated that at least two students and two teachers were among the fatalities. Other students sustained injuries while attempting to flee the scene, not from gunfire. Emergency radio communications reported a medical team was dispatched to the 6th floor of Building 5 where a victim was undergoing CPR.
Police Colonel Phatsakorn Chaitaweewong, superintendent of Plai Bang Police Station, confirmed the shooting occurred inside the school. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area and refrain from livestreaming the incident, as the situation was not yet under control. Armed response units were deployed to secure the school, and students and staff were being evacuated from the campus.
Thailand has a history of school shootings. In February of the current year, a gunman killed one teacher during an incident involving a machine gun and hostages at a school in Songkhla province. In 2022, Panya Khamrab fatally shot 37 people, including 24 children, in a rampage at a nursery school in Bua Lamphu province. Firearms are reportedly widely available in Thailand through both legal channels and the black market.
