Eleven people died overnight in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province when heavy rains caused the roof of a mud-brick house to collapse, according to police and rescue officials.

The incident occurred in the Kohat district, stated Bilal Faizi of the provincial emergency service. Rescuers recovered 11 bodies, primarily comprising women and children, and turned them over to their families for burial.

Elsewhere in the country, the Gilgit-Baltistan region also experienced heavy monsoon downpours on Monday. This led to landslides that obstructed several roads and damaged homes, as reported by a statement from regional emergency services.

Authorities have cautioned tourists against traveling to northern Pakistan due to the elevated risks of landslides and flash flooding.

Pakistan annually endures significant monsoon rains, which often result in floods and landslides that claim lives and inflict widespread damage. In 2022, exceptionally heavy monsoon rains and subsequent flooding inundated close to a third of the nation, causing 1,739 fatalities and an estimated $30 billion in damages.
