10 Injured, Two Critically, After Car Plunges into Crowd in Australia

Ten people sustained injuries, including two who are in critical condition, after a vehicle collided with a crowd in Newcastle, Australia, on Saturday morning. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. local time as onlookers gathered for a procession for the Newcastle Knights rugby team.

Authorities reported that a 5-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man were transported to the hospital and remain in critical condition. Other injured individuals, including another 5-year-old and a 2-year-old, were taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition. The ages of the remaining injured parties ranged from 24 to 63.

The driver, an 18-year-old, was taken into custody at the scene. Police, traffic patrols, and paramedics responded to the incident, with several people receiving treatment from paramedics at the scene.

Newcastle Link Road was closed in both directions, affecting the planned route of the procession. Early information suggests the driver may have been revving the vehicle before losing control and driving into the crowd, according to Newcastle Mayor Gavin Morris.

The Newcastle Knights issued a statement expressing their thoughts for those impacted by the incident. The situation is developing, and further updates are expected.
