Rock band ZZ Top abruptly canceled their scheduled performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Wednesday, hours before the concert was set to begin. The cancellation was attributed to "unforeseen personnel matters" in a statement posted on the band's official Instagram account.
Frontman Billy Gibbons further elaborated in a statement, "Insurmountable obstacles require canceling our Hollywood Bowl performance." He added that the band relies on the understanding of their "friends, fans and followers" during this "brief interruption."
No specific details regarding the personnel issues were provided. ZZ Top's official website indicates that the band is still slated to perform on Friday at the Saroyan Theater in Fresno, California. The band's representative did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Cheap Trick, who were also scheduled to perform at the Hollywood Bowl on Wednesday, announced via Instagram that they would instead perform at a smaller venue, The Troubadour in West Hollywood, for a "very special, intimate show."
Ticket holders for the canceled ZZ Top performance will receive refunds. The band, formed in 1969 by Gibbons, also includes drummer Frank Beard and bassist Elwood Francis, who replaced original member Dusty Hill. Hill died in 2021 at the age of 72.
ZZ Top has released 15 studio albums and sold an estimated 50 million records. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Gibbons, 76, previously told The New York Post in January that he has no plans to retire from performing, describing it as "the greatest job in the world."
