Zooey Deschanel: "New Girl" Reboot Unlikely Due to Legal Complications
The actress cited "complicated legal stuff" as a primary obstacle to a potential revival of the popular sitcom.
Zooey Deschanel, star of the former Fox television series "New Girl," has indicated that a reboot of the show is unlikely to materialize due to significant legal entanglements. Deschanel, who portrayed Jessica Day for all 146 episodes from 2011 to 2018, stated in a recent interview with the California Post that while she and her castmates would be open to working together again, the complexities involved present a substantial barrier.
"I think it’s something everyone’s kind of having fun, kind of joking about, but there’s a lot of complicated legal stuff to putting a reunion together," Deschanel explained. She added that despite these hurdles, she doesn't completely rule out the possibility, stating, "anything could happen."
The actress expressed pride in the show's legacy, noting its enduring connection with audiences. "I know we’re all very appreciative of that," she said regarding the continued fan engagement.
Deschanel is currently active with her indie pop band She & Him, performing on tour with dates scheduled in California, including Los Angeles on October 2 and 3 at The Troubadour. The band's current tour, "Pump Up the Volumes," focuses on their earlier material. Additionally, Deschanel is involved with the upcoming comedic drama "Trash Mountain," which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The cast of "New Girl," which also included actors Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone, Lamorne Morris, Jake Johnson, and Damon Wayans Jr., remains connected. Deschanel mentioned they will be reuniting next month to receive the Rising Phoenix Award at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Hollywood, an event she looks forward to as a rare opportunity for the full ensemble to gather.
"New Girl" earned five Emmy nominations during its seven-season run and centered on the lives of a quirky teacher and her eccentric roommates in a Los Angeles loft. The series concluded in 2018.
