Actress Zoe Saldana has spoken about the high expectations set by writer and director Taylor Sheridan, describing the creative environment as one that offers collaborators a clear choice: rise to the challenge or depart.
Saldana, who has worked with Sheridan for three years on the spy thriller series "Lioness," stated that working with him is a challenge because he "does raise the bar." She told People that actors are presented with two options: "either accept the challenge and make sure that you don’t f--k up... or you quit." Saldana, however, embraces this demanding approach, saying, "I like being challenged. I really do."
Despite the rigorous atmosphere, Saldana also characterized Sheridan's working environment as collaborative. She explained that when he perceives genuine commitment and understanding from an actor, he is receptive. "He meets you where you’re at. He’s very collaborative," she said, adding that she values collaborating with him due to her appreciation for his artistic vision and writing.
"Lioness," which premiered in July 2023 and also stars Nicole Kidman, is inspired by a real U.S. military program. The series centers on Joe (Saldana), a CIA officer overseeing field operatives, as she navigates the complexities of her personal life alongside her demanding professional role as a key operative in counter-terrorism efforts.
Saldana's perspective stands in contrast to recent comments made by actor Ed Harris regarding his experience with Sheridan on the "Yellowstone" spinoff "Dutton Ranch." Harris, 75, claimed he was misled about the significance of his role as Everett McKinney, a veterinarian.
Harris told Variety that prior to signing on, he was led to believe he was one of four main characters, a portrayal that did not align with his experience during filming. "I was feeling underused and inconsequential," he recalled, noting that he expressed this to production. He also recounted an instance where a scene featuring him singing in a bar was cut from the final episode, which he found particularly frustrating. He stated that he was informed the scene was removed because it was "too 'up' for the dark ending of that episode."
Production informed Harris that his character is slated to have a more substantial role in the second season of "Dutton Ranch." However, the actor expressed his frustration with his initial experience on the series. He indicated that the incident with the cut scene was significant enough for him to consider voiding his contract, though it remains unclear if he intends to leave the show.
