Zinc Lozenges May Shorten Colds, Experts Say

While there is no definitive cure for the common cold, some scientific evidence suggests that zinc lozenges, when taken correctly, may help shorten the duration of illness. Experts indicate that the effectiveness of zinc depends heavily on its formulation and the dosage administered.

Studies and expert opinions suggest that sucking on zinc lozenges can potentially reduce the length of a cold by up to three days. However, it is crucial to use specific types of zinc, such as zinc gluconate or zinc acetate, and to start taking them soon after the onset of cold symptoms. The concentration of zinc ions released in the mouth and throat is believed to be key to its potential therapeutic effect.

Ordinary zinc supplements, particularly those not designed for immediate release in the oral cavity, may not offer the same benefits. Experts caution that the amount of elemental zinc in a lozenge should be within a specific range, typically between 75 and 100 milligrams per day, divided into multiple doses. Consuming excessive amounts of zinc can lead to side effects, including nausea and a metallic taste.

The surge in respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19 and influenza, during colder months has renewed interest in accessible remedies for common ailments. While zinc is not a preventative measure, its potential to mitigate the severity and duration of a cold makes it a subject of ongoing discussion among health professionals.
