Ziaire Williams Emerges as Lakers' Defensive X-Factor Outside 'Big 3'
Williams' athleticism and defensive potential have impressed during Lakers training camp, potentially filling a key need.
The Los Angeles Lakers may have found a crucial defensive asset outside of their star trio in Ziaire Williams. The 25-year-old wing has reportedly surpassed expectations in training camp, emerging as a potential X-factor for the team.
Williams, entering his sixth NBA season, was the 10th overall pick in the 2021 draft. Standing at 6-foot-10 with a significant wingspan, he brings an athletic and physical presence to the perimeter. His defensive capabilities were on display in flashes during his previous tenure with the Nets, though the team's limited success did not always highlight lockdown defense.
This season, however, the Lakers are in need of such a skillset. With Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves leading the offensive charge and Walker Kessler anchoring the paint, the Lakers are looking for players who can fill specific roles, particularly on the defensive end. Williams fits the profile of an athletic perimeter defender, a quality the team has lacked in recent seasons.
Head coach JJ Redick has noted the intense competition in training camp, even adjusting practices due to the physicality. Williams himself expressed confidence in his defensive capabilities, stating, "there’s not really anything I’m not comfortable with" on that end of the floor. This aggressive mindset, combined with the defensive support from Kessler, could allow Williams to take more risks and gambles on defense.
Williams' performance has been a bright spot, with his physicality and quick hands noted. If he can consistently provide the lockdown perimeter defense the Lakers need, it could significantly elevate the team's ceiling as they aim to improve on their recent playoff performances.
