Zendaya Shops in Paris Amid Social Media Backlash Over PFW Seating Etiquette
The actress was criticized for remaining seated when Brigitte Macron approached her at a Paris Fashion Week show, but was later seen enjoying a shopping spree.
Actress Zendaya was seen enjoying a shopping spree in Paris on Thursday, continuing her style presence in the city after attending Paris Fashion Week. Earlier in the week, she faced online criticism for her perceived lack of manners during the Louis Vuitton show.
While seated front row at the runway event held at the Louvre, Zendaya was approached by Brigitte Macron, the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron. Video footage showed Zendaya appearing to chat with another guest before acknowledging Macron with a smile and a handshake, remaining seated throughout the interaction. This moment sparked a debate on social media, with some users asserting that basic etiquette dictates standing to greet a guest, especially a First Lady.
Critics argued that Zendaya should have stood out of respect for Macron's position and age, with one user commenting, "You stand when you greet anyone, basic manners." Others pointed out that Zendaya also remained seated when Bernard Arnault, the chief executive of LVMH, the conglomerate that owns Louis Vuitton, greeted her shortly before Macron's arrival. Some noted that Arnault's position as owner of the luxury brand might warrant standing, given the context of a fashion show.
However, many defended the actress, questioning why she should have to stand for Macron, with one commenter stating, "Zendaya is not a foreign dignitary nor a citizen of France." Others suggested that Zendaya may have been caught off guard and that politeness in genuine expression is more important than strict adherence to protocol during a fashion event.
Following the online discussion, Zendaya, accompanied by her assistant Darnell Appling, visited the concept store Merci. She was seen wearing light-wash jeans, a white shirt, and a vintage 1999 Prada duster coat valued at approximately £2,000. Her ensemble was completed with a Louis Vuitton clutch and Maison Margiela Tabi wedge shoes, a style she has previously championed, including custom Christian Louboutin x Maison Margiela Tabi stiletto pumps at the 2024 Met Gala.
