Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Canada on Thursday for discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney, continuing his international efforts to secure ongoing military support for Ukraine's defense against Russia's invasion. The visit comes as Ukraine faces increased pressure from Russia's aerial campaign, which Ukrainian officials state is targeting the nation's power grid ahead of winter to demoralize the civilian population.
Zelenskyy indicated that a primary focus of his talks in Canada would be on bolstering Ukraine's defenses, particularly in protecting its skies and preparing for the winter months. "We will discuss how to strengthen our resilience, support our people, and ensure that Ukraine has the capabilities it needs to defend itself," he stated in a social media post.
The Ukrainian president's arrival in Calgary, Alberta, on Wednesday night followed a flight delay from Moldova to Norway due to airspace closures triggered by a drone incursion. Both Romania and Moldova, neighboring Ukraine, have reported repeated drone incursions since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Simultaneously, aerial engagements between Russia and Ukraine have escalated. Russian officials reported on Thursday that their forces had intercepted 448 Ukrainian drones overnight. These drones were reportedly destroyed over 13 Russian regions, Crimea, and the Black and Caspian seas. In a separate incident, falling debris from a Ukrainian drone ignited a fire at a home in Russia's southwestern Voronezh region, resulting in one fatality and two injuries, according to local Governor Alexander Gusev. Additionally, a Ukrainian sea drone reportedly injured 28 people, including two children, in the Russian city of Sochi, damaging waterfront infrastructure.
Recent diplomatic efforts by the United States to mediate an end to the more than four-year conflict have not yielded significant breakthroughs, although Washington-brokered talks between Moscow and Kyiv are anticipated to continue.
