Zelenskyy to Address UN as Trump Pushes for End to Russia-Ukraine War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, presenting concrete security proposals and de-escalation measures as the conflict with Russia enters its fourth year. His appearance comes as President Donald Trump is actively pressing for an end to the war and has stated that a peace deal is close to being finalized.

Zelenskyy met with Trump in New York prior to his UN address to discuss strategies for concluding the ongoing conflict. Trump expressed optimism about reaching an agreement, stating, "We’re working very closely with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine, and we will get that one done," adding that an accord would be achieved "more quickly than people understand."

The Ukrainian president indicated he would also seek additional air defenses, support for Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, and assistance in protecting grain exports through the Black Sea. His government has stated that it expects Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy sector and food exports to cease, followed by reciprocal de-escalation steps from Kyiv.

Trump has publicly urged Ukraine to halt its attacks on Russian oil refineries. While acknowledging the effectiveness of these strikes against Russia, he also pointed out their impact on diesel prices. During his address to the UN on Tuesday, Trump suggested the possibility of imposing tariffs on buyers of Russian energy if necessary to hasten the war's end. He described the ongoing conflict as "ridiculous and never ending" and noted the significant monthly casualties.

The differing priorities between the US administration and Ukraine are expected to shape the diplomatic discourse at the UNGA. Trump is advocating for a swift path to negotiations, while Kyiv emphasizes the need for military support and security assurances to ensure the durability of any agreement.

The approach of winter adds urgency to the situation. U.N. investigators have warned that renewed Russian attacks on Ukraine's power grid could lead to widespread electricity and heating outages for millions. Ukraine is requesting more Patriot air defense systems and energy assistance, along with support for domestic production of U.S.-designed interceptors.

Zelenskyy's address is anticipated to provide further clarity on Ukraine's strategy for the coming phase of the war, including its expectations from Washington, its desired European involvement, and the conditions it would impose on any ceasefire or peace settlement.
