Zelenskyy Open to Ceasefire in Ukraine War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated an openness to freezing the front lines of the ongoing war with Russia as a means to achieve a ceasefire and ultimately end the conflict. In an interview with "Fox & Friends," Zelenskyy stated that a freeze is "a real way to end this war." He referred to this as a ceasefire or, echoing former President Trump, a "stop killing."

"Freeze and stop. And, of course, this is the minimum of what we need from Russia today. Then, of course, we will go to the president and to Europeans, and we'll ask security guarantees," Zelenskyy explained. He also emphasized the need for Ukrainians displaced by the war to return home and rebuild the country, noting that millions have lost their homes and are living abroad.

Zelenskyy's remarks come amidst renewed diplomatic activity, including the release of retired American teacher Stephen Hubbard from Russian detention. Hubbard had been imprisoned on charges of fighting as a mercenary in Ukraine. President Donald Trump was involved in securing his release. According to Putin's foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov, Russian President Vladimir Putin has also agreed "in principle" to resume trilateral negotiations with the U.S. and Ukraine after November 10.

Russia has historically rejected ceasefire deals, often citing concerns that they would allow Ukraine time to rearm. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently stated, "There will be no ceasefire to bring him back to his senses and pump him full of weapons." Zelenskyy highlighted the ongoing Russian attacks, stating, "Russia strikes our country virtually every hour." He added, "We are losing people. Because of the Russian attacks, we're losing people and time. It's such a pity, because our children don't have a real life and childhood."

Despite the challenges, Zelenskyy expressed determination. "Of course, we are not losing this war. But we are losing people," he said. "That's why we need to end this war as quickly as possible. I hope that our partners, Americans and Europeans, will help us." He concluded by noting the strength of Ukrainian soldiers on the battlefield as a crucial factor supporting him during negotiations.
