Zelensky Urges UK Chancellor to Prioritize Defense Spending
Ukrainian President voices concern over delays in meeting NATO targets, calls for increased military readiness in Europe.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged UK Chancellor John Healey not to delay in increasing defense spending, emphasizing its critical importance in the face of Russian aggression. Speaking ahead of Healey's budget announcement, Zelensky directly advised the Chancellor, "My advice to John is don't delay. Sorry John... but it's important to be direct."
Despite Zelensky's plea, the Chancellor is not expected to outline specific plans for meeting NATO's defense spending targets during his budget presentation. Full details on how the government intends to reach the target of 3.5 percent of GDP for defense spending by 2035 are reportedly being deferred to a spending review next autumn.
It is anticipated that Healey will announce a preliminary step towards a 3 percent of GDP defense spending target by 2030. This initial measure may involve allocating additional funds to the National Wealth Fund and the British Business Bank, with the aim of directing some capital towards UK defense firms, including drone manufacturers and military technology companies.
This approach, which would increase defense spending as a percentage of GDP, could face criticism for relying on long-term borrowing rather than seeking spending cuts elsewhere. Notably, Healey himself previously resigned as defense secretary from a previous administration over concerns regarding defense spending.
In broader warnings to European nations, Zelensky stressed the need to bolster military capabilities and infrastructure. He highlighted the perceived weakness of air defense systems across Europe, including in the UK, and characterized Russian policy as dangerous. Zelensky also called on leaders, including Prime Minister Andy Burnham, to address concerns about US President Donald Trump's stance towards Russia, noting Trump's recent critical remarks about Ukraine and his easing of sanctions on Russia.
