Zelensky Pleads for Faster Patriot Missile Deliveries Amidst Escalating Russian Strikes
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged European allies to accelerate the delivery of Patriot interceptor missiles following a series of Russian attacks that resulted in civilian casualties and damaged infrastructure.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on European nations to expedite the delivery of Patriot interceptor missiles, citing a recent escalation in Russian strikes that killed four Ukrainians overnight and injured dozens more. Moscow's forces targeted the Dnipro region and other areas, with the Russian defense ministry claiming to have struck a cargo vessel carrying Ukrainian military supplies.
In addition to the Dnipro region, Russian forces also hit a logistics center, a distribution center, and a logistics terminal in Kharkiv. According to the Russian ministry, these facilities were used for storing and distributing dual-use cargo for the Ukrainian military. While Reuters could not independently verify Moscow's claims, images from Kharkiv showed firefighters at the scene of a damaged shopping center.
Concurrently, an overnight Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian city of Belgorod resulted in two deaths and 13 injuries, according to local authorities. The attack also caused damage to numerous residential buildings, vehicles, and other infrastructure. A separate incident in a village near Shebekino reported one fatality and one injury.
Zelensky stated that Russia has launched a significant number of guided aerial bombs, missiles, and attack drones against Ukraine in the past week. He highlighted that these strikes frequently lead to civilian casualties and injuries. He specifically mentioned a Russian drone strike on a high-rise apartment building in Vinnytsia that injured six people, and a "double-tap" strike in Kharkiv that targeted emergency services responding to an initial missile hit on a home improvement hypermarket.
Damage has been reported across nine Ukrainian regions, affecting thermal power plants, substations, mines, grain storage facilities, and shopping malls. Zelensky characterized these actions as Russia's response to diplomatic efforts.
The Ukrainian president emphasized the need for allies to "unblock" Patriot missile deliveries and to continue supporting Ukrainian combat aviation to counter Russian drones. He noted that while Britain had pledged to help Ukraine build its own Patriot air defense system, Washington has reduced its shipments of Pac-3 missiles, redirecting resources to the Middle East. This shift has reportedly left Ukraine more vulnerable to Russian barrages.
Meanwhile, the operational status of Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service in Ukraine has been a point of contention. Musk stated that SpaceX had restricted Ukraine's Starlink service after accusing Kyiv of violating terms of service by using it for military operations, a claim that was later denied. Musk asserted that Starlink was critical for Ukraine's defense and that its deactivation would severely impact the front lines. He added that Starlink remained a civilian system and not a tool for killing.
Following discussions and intervention, Zelensky announced on Saturday that Starlink and Starshield operations had been restored to previous speed levels, beginning overnight and showing sufficient speeds by the morning. He expressed gratitude to American officials, members of Congress, and media for their roles in resolving the issue. He emphasized the importance of the service for frontline logistics and defending against drones.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevgeniy Khmara confirmed the recovery of Starlink/Starshield speeds, noting stable connections and speeds above 400 km/h, which he deemed crucial for soldiers, drone operations, logistics, and communications.
