Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with President Donald Trump for an hour in the Oval Office on Tuesday, a meeting described by White House sources as "positive and productive." The closed-door discussion focused on Ukraine's defense needs, including anti-ballistic defense systems and potential licenses for Patriot interceptor production.
The meeting occurred shortly after Ukraine reported using its long-range capabilities to strike an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea, which Kyiv stated was transporting military cargo and drone components destined for Russian forces. Iran condemned the strike, claiming it was a commercial vessel and confirming the death of one sailor.
Zelensky took to X following the meeting, calling it "good" and detailing that he and Trump discussed "licenses for Patriot interceptor production and several other ideas that could help." He added that they also spoke about the importance of "reinvigorating" the diplomatic process and that their teams would arrange details for a future meeting. A Ukrainian source present described the bilateral meeting as "very practical" and noted discussions about "renewed diplomatic efforts."
This engagement marks a continued thawing in the relationship between Zelensky and Trump, which had been strained since an "icy encounter" approximately 17 months prior. Since that initial tense meeting, their interactions have reportedly improved through diplomatic engagements, including discussions at the G7 summit and a NATO summit.
Zelensky has reportedly sought to present Ukraine not just as a recipient of aid but as a contributor to broader security interests, particularly in countering the deepening defense alliance between Moscow and Tehran. This comes as the US has provided substantial financial and military aid to Ukraine since the start of its conflict with Russia.
Following his meeting with Trump, Zelensky was scheduled to attend the funeral of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was also expected. Netanyahu was also slated to meet with Trump at the Oval Office after Zelensky's departure.
