Zelensky Accuses Trump of 'Betrayal' Over Satellite Data Restrictions
Ukrainian President says 'people will die' as Elon Musk states US President has ultimate control over SpaceX's military satellite services.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused former U.S. President Donald Trump of "betrayal" following restrictions on crucial satellite data, stating that "people will die" as a consequence.
Zelensky made these remarks after Ukraine's military revealed that its access to SpaceX's Starshield satellite system had been "throttled," hindering vital strikes on Russian military targets. The system, a military package offered by SpaceX, reportedly imposed a speed limit, grounding drone operations that rely on live feeds to evade Russian defenses. Zelensky stated that Russia has shown "ostentatious disrespect toward the U.S." with its actions.
Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, has indicated that the U.S. President ultimately controls any limitations on Starshield's speed or usage, differentiating it from Starlink, SpaceX's commercial service. Musk wrote, "Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the U.S. military and ultimately Potus [the US President]."
These developments come after a period of tension between Zelensky and Trump. Trump has recently called for Zelensky to step down as leader and has engaged in dealings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, including a reported agreement to purchase Russian diesel. Trump has also blamed Zelensky for rising energy prices and proposed a ceasefire that Russia has since violated.
Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukraine, with recent missile strikes targeting Kharkiv and Kyiv. The strikes have damaged energy infrastructure, leaving hundreds of thousands without power, and have resulted in civilian casualties. Zelensky described the onslaught as "entirely deliberate and demonstrative in its scale."
In response to the satellite data restrictions, Ukraine's defense ministry noted that while some lower-speed restrictions were removed, the 100 mph limit remained. An adviser to Zelensky on defense technologies suggested the timing of these restrictions was not coincidental and was related to the current political climate. Ukrainian military officials have warned that these restrictions critically impede their operations, potentially leading to increased civilian deaths.
Zelensky, speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored, expressed his disappointment, saying, "It is a pity that we are losing a strong partner. It is painful when President Trump chooses one side – not our side." He warned Trump, "This is not the right side of history."
Amidst these challenges, Zelensky has been seeking support from allies. He recently visited the United Kingdom, where he met with King Charles III and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The UK has reiterated its commitment to supporting Ukraine.
