Zaxby's Opens First Manhattan Location, Intensifying Chicken Finger War
The Georgia-based chain's arrival in New York City signals a new front in the competitive fast-food landscape, challenging rivals like Raising Cane's.
Zaxby's, a Southern fried chicken chain, has opened its first Manhattan restaurant on the Upper East Side, marking a significant expansion into the New York City market. The new location, situated at 1267 First Avenue between 68th and 69th Streets, celebrated its grand opening and held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 8.
"New York is one of the most influential food cities in the world, and we’re incredibly proud to introduce Zaxbys to this market," said Bernard Acoca, CEO of Zaxbys. "Whether it’s Southern transplants looking for a taste of home or New Yorkers discovering our Chicken Fingerz and signature sauces for the first time, we’re excited to share the Southern hospitality and bold flavor experiences that have made Zaxbys a fan favorite for more than 35 years."
The chain, founded in 1990 and operating over 1,000 locations across 24 states, had previously made its New York debut earlier this summer with a Bronx location at 3260 Boston Road.
Zaxby's entry into Manhattan escalates the competition with other chicken tender specialists, particularly Raising Cane's, which established its own New York presence with a large Times Square flagship store in 2023. This rivalry, sometimes referred to as the "Chicken Tender War," is characterized by intense brand loyalty and frequent proximity of new locations.
Both Zaxby's and Raising Cane's offer similar core menus featuring chicken tenders, crinkle-cut fries, Texas toast, and a signature dipping sauce. Zaxby's signature Zax Sauce and Raising Cane's Cane's Sauce share a base of mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. However, Zaxby's provides a broader selection of sauce flavors, including buffalo, teriyaki, and sweet heat, and its sauces are factory-sealed. Cane's Sauce is prepared fresh daily in each store.
The competitive landscape is also seeing potential shifts with McDonald's reportedly planning to test hand-breaded chicken menu items in approximately 200 U.S. and Ireland locations next year, aiming to capture market share from established competitors.
Zaxby's has promoted its new Upper East Side opening through social media, featuring its mascot, Coop, in various posts. The arrival has generated enthusiasm among fans, with many expressing excitement online about the chain's presence in their neighborhood and anticipation for its signature sauces.
