Director Zack Snyder made a return to the Warner Bros. lot on Monday night, hosting a screening of John Boorman's 1981 film "Excalibur" for studio staff. This event marks a significant moment for the director and the studio, with whom he had a contentious split in 2021.
Sources described Snyder's reception as a "hero's welcome" from motion picture group employees and guests. Following the screening, Snyder participated in a Q&A session with studio heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy. De Luca and Abdy initiated these movie nights in 2022 as a way to celebrate the studio's film library and its filmmakers.
The screenings have increasingly served as a morale-boosting initiative for Warner Bros. staff, who are reportedly experiencing low spirits amid the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the proposed $110 billion merger with Paramount. A coalition of 12 state attorneys general, led by California's Rob Bonta, is actively seeking to block the merger, creating a period of perceived "purgatory" for the studio.
Snyder's presence on the lot has generated speculation about his potential future involvement with Warner Bros. He is currently writing and directing a remake of "Escape From New York" for StudioCanal, a company whose parent, CANAL+, signed a new multi-year agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) in December. It has been suggested that Snyder's "Escape From New York" remake could potentially be distributed by Warner Bros.
This return comes years after Snyder's departure from the studio in 2021, which followed disputes over the production of "Zack Snyder's Justice League." At that time, fans had heavily criticized the studio for enlisting Joss Whedon to oversee reshoots and post-production on the 2017 "Justice League" film. Many of the executives and creatives involved in that period have since departed from Warner Bros.
