Zacharia: White House Tenure Taught Kids Loyalty Over Popularity
Former press secretary Katie Zacharia discusses her brief White House stint and the enduring lesson of integrity for her children.
Former White House press secretary Katie Zacharia stated that her brief, five-day tenure in the Trump administration provided a valuable life lesson for her four children: the importance of loyalty and integrity, even amidst public criticism. Zacharia, speaking from her home in Thousand Oaks, California, reflected on her final day in the role, which concluded on October 16.
Her appearance at the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room podium on October 13 drew significant online backlash and mockery. However, Zacharia contended that enduring this public scrutiny was worthwhile to set an example for her family. "What they witnessed was a mother standing strong while she’s an international meme, or when everyone’s making fun of her, including people who we thought would be on our side," she told the California Post. "If… I went through that entire thing only to teach my kids to have integrity and to have loyalty, then I think it was worth it."
Zacharia described her final evening in the position as "a tough night," occurring the day after her eldest son's birthday and coinciding with a dinner attended by Vice President JD Vance.
She recounted that her departure also led to security concerns, with individuals perceived as stalkers and onlookers descending on her neighborhood. Neighbors reportedly intervened to deter these individuals.
Regarding her brief time as press secretary, Zacharia claimed she received "only a few hours of actual briefing material" on the morning of her first press conference. She noted that former press secretaries, including Kayleigh McEnany, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Ari Fleischer, and Sean Spicer, had reached out to express sympathy for what she characterized as an insufficient preparation period.
Zacharia, a conservative commentator, maintained that President Donald Trump recruited her directly for the role, based on her years of appearances on television. She recalled Trump's words upon her departure: "You know, there are other ways to make a living."
Zacharia indicated that she has new career announcements planned and affirmed her commitment to continuing as an outspoken ally of Trump from outside the executive branch. She also detailed her experiences in an opinion piece for the California Post.
