Zach Bryan Wears 'Free Palestine' Shirt at Gillette Stadium, Sparking Debate
The country music star's attire at the venue owned by Robert Kraft, who previously barred Macklemore for similar remarks, drew mixed reactions online.
Country music artist Zach Bryan generated controversy Friday night by appearing on stage at Gillette Stadium wearing a "Free Palestine" t-shirt. His choice of attire at the venue, owned by New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, comes weeks after Macklemore was barred from performing there due to his own "Free Palestine" remarks, which Kraft described as part of a "broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery."
Bryan, who is scheduled for a second night at Gillette Stadium, did not offer verbal commentary on his shirt. However, members of his band also appeared to wear clothing associated with the Palestinian cause. The visual statement immediately ignited a debate on social media, dividing opinion between those who viewed it as a courageous political stance and those who felt it was an inappropriate introduction of politics into a concert setting.
Supporters praised Bryan's decision, with one social media user writing, "A great decision by Zach Bryan and his crew. I’m sure they will have to pay a price, but a courageous statement to help the conservative crowds see the light." Others defended his right to express his views, even if disagreed with, noting that he "didn’t stand there & preach his politics. It’s a shirt. He sang songs what he’s suppose to do."
Conversely, some attendees and online commentators expressed disappointment. "People don't buy concert tickets to get political opinions," one user argued. Another commenter drew a direct parallel to the Macklemore situation, stating, "Zach Bryan played Gillette Stadium Friday night in a ‘Free Palestine’ shirt. That’s Robert Kraft’s stadium. Last month Kraft barred Macklemore there over his ‘free Palestine’ remarks... Kraft should cancel tonight’s show. Same standard he held Macklemore to."
The incident occurs in the wake of Macklemore being removed from the remaining U.S. dates of Ed Sheeran's stadium tour. Sheeran stated that the decision was not his and that he had attempted to mediate the dispute, including speaking with Kraft.
Macklemore's removal followed his performance on September 4th, where he performed his song "Hind's Hall" while repeatedly chanting "Free Palestine" with accompanying visuals from Gaza. This performance drew criticism, leading Macklemore to defend his actions by stating, "Wanting all humans to be treated equal should never be controversial." He later announced a new concert series titled the "Free Palestine Tour."
Kraft, in his statement regarding Macklemore, emphasized Gillette Stadium's commitment to a welcoming environment and ensuring that events do not "provide a platform for hate speech." He cited Macklemore's "recent actions, material shared from the stage... and a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery" as reasons for barring him from the September concerts.
