Hollywood actor Zac Efron's long-rumored off-grid "forever home" in Australia is rapidly taking shape, with new aerial photographs offering a clear view of the ambitious construction project.
The secluded 128-hectare property in the Tweed Valley, New South Wales, is being transformed into a sustainable retreat dubbed 'Futurecave.' The development features multiple steel-framed pavilions with living green roofs, connected by elevated walkways.
Construction materials, earthmoving equipment, and solar panels are visible across the site, indicating significant progress. The design includes raised pods built into the hillside, surrounded by dense native trees, and aims to celebrate the landscape.
Efron purchased the rural block in 2020 after spending extended periods in Australia. The project is being overseen by environmental designer Joost Bakker, who is pioneering the use of experimental building materials. These include hemp blocks, recycled oyster shells, agricultural waste products, and plant-based boards, all intended to replace traditional concrete and create a carbon-sequestering, habitat-creating home.
Bakker has stated that Efron gave him creative freedom to push sustainable construction methods. The team has spent over a year developing these alternative materials. "We're experimenting with making hemp blocks, replacing concrete with two materials that restore the environment - hemp, possibly the best plant on earth at repairing and restoring soil health, and of course oysters, nature's ultimate ocean restorer," Bakker explained.
The six-bedroom, two-storey residence is expected to cost approximately $2.685 million to construct and will span about 830 square meters. The design, by architect Frank Burridge, emphasizes integrating the structures with the natural environment, offering sweeping views and encouraging a connection to the outdoors.
The sustainability focus extends to the interior, with plans for kitchen and bathroom joinery to be made using plant-based boards derived from agricultural crop waste.
Sources close to Efron have suggested he may be considering a permanent move to Australia, particularly after listing his Los Angeles mansion for sale. His ties to the country have strengthened since the pandemic, having filmed projects and attended events there in recent years.
