YouTuber Arrested in Connection With Indian Finance Influencer's Suicide
Authorities allege cyberbullying and extortion played a role in the death of popular Instagram personality V Harish.
A 27-year-old Indian finance influencer, V Harish, who gained a significant following on his Instagram account "Finance with Harish," was found dead at his home near Chennai. His death, ruled a suicide, has led to the arrest of YouTuber Jason Samuel on allegations of cyberbullying and extortion.
Harish's father filed a complaint with the police, alleging that his son took his life due to online harassment by Samuel, identified as the CEO of tech-venture studio Zemuria. Police arrested Samuel on Thursday, citing preliminary investigations that indicated his involvement in attempting to extort money from Harish and posting defamatory content about him online. Samuel has denied the cyberbullying allegations, stating he merely pointed out Harish's lack of proper licensing to provide financial advice.
Harish had cultivated a large online presence over five years, publishing more than 1,500 videos and accumulating over 1.3 million followers. His content, which simplified financial concepts using popular culture references, gained traction amid a surge in new retail investors in India, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. The National Stock Exchange reported over 130 million unique investors by early 2024, a substantial increase from under 30 million in 2019.
However, Harish's Instagram account was disabled in September after Meta received complaints that he was not registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), a requirement for offering investment advice. A backup account was also subsequently removed following similar complaints.
According to news reports, Harish recorded a video message before his death stating that "five years of hard work has been stolen" from him. In the video, he apologized to his family and followers.
Samuel's YouTube video on October 18 questioned Harish's credentials, specifically his lack of Sebi or Amfi registrations, and noted the disabling of his Instagram account. Harish's father contends that this video initiated a severe online harassment campaign that contributed to his son's distress and eventual death. His complaint was registered under charges of abetment to suicide.
Samuel, in a statement on X, expressed grief over Harish's death but maintained that his actions were aimed at consumer protection by highlighting illegal activity and misrepresented credentials. He stated he requested Harish obtain proper licensing rather than intending to cause harm.
