Accusations that younger generations are overly sensitive are unfounded, according to Professor Peter Fonagy, who leads an independent review into mental health, ADHD, and autism.
Fonagy stated that there has been a genuine increase in mental distress among children and young people, with anxiety, depression, self-harm, and eating disorders being the most prevalent issues.
His review was commissioned nine months ago by Wes Streeting, the then-health secretary. Streeting had previously suggested in an interview that young people were being over-diagnosed and "written off."
Young mental health ambassadors, interviewed by the BBC's Catherine Burns, have echoed the review's findings and are advocating for enhanced mental health support services.
