Kelsey Pfendler, a 21-year-old Grand Canyon river rafting guide, has completed a solo rowing journey from California to Hawaii, arriving in Honolulu on Friday night after nearly 44 days at sea. Hundreds gathered to welcome her as she completed the more than 2,400-mile voyage in her 21-foot rowboat, Lily.

Pendler set out with the aim of becoming the first American woman, the youngest woman, and the fastest woman to complete the mid-Pacific crossing solo. Her journey was closely followed on social media, where she shared videos detailing the challenges and daily life of her trek.

According to records maintained by Ocean Rowing Society International, Pfendler appears to have surpassed previous speed records for both women and men. The organization's online records indicated her finish time of just under 44 days, which is significantly faster than the previous comparable female record of 86 days and the male record of 52 days.

In videos shared during her voyage, Pfendler documented the logistical and survival aspects of her journey, including managing blistered hands, coping with sleep deprivation due to winds, and the mental and physical toll of unfavorable currents. She also described her methods for cooking, sun protection, clothing care, and freshwater generation.

Pfendler, who has worked as a professional raft guide in the Grand Canyon for eight years, expressed her passion for remote maritime endeavors. As she neared Oahu, she reflected on the significance of her accomplishment, hoping it would empower others. "If any part of this made at least one person feel a little bit more powerful in their own skin, I couldn’t ask for anything else and I’m happy," she said. "Think about trying to find your own big, hard, scary thing. You might not think that you are strong enough to finish it right now, but you’re definitely strong enough to start it, and you’ll find everything else along the way. I’m going to go finish my big, hard scary thing."

Pfendler was expected to address the media following her arrival, though an immediate response to interview requests was not available. Her team has not yet officially commented on the record-breaking aspect of her journey.
