Young Police Constable Killed in High-Speed Crash to Be Laid to Rest

A young police constable, Mia Lay, 20, who had been with the NSW Police for just 16 months, will be laid to rest after a fatal car crash. Constable Lay was a passenger in a marked police vehicle when it crashed into a tree early on September 25 in the Sydney suburb of Redfern. Multiple police sources reported that the car was traveling at over 150 km/h at the time of the collision on Gibbons Street, which resulted in Constable Lay's immediate death.

A funeral service for Constable Lay is scheduled to take place at St Andrew's Cathedral in central Sydney on Wednesday. Her death was commemorated on National Police Remembrance Day on September 29, with NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley describing it as a 'dark day'. NSW Premier Chris Minns paid tribute to her at a service, noting her as 'talented, optimistic, calm under pressure' and a dedicated athlete who chose to serve the community. He remarked on the rapid maturity expected of police officers, who often face danger beyond their years while their peers are still in university or beginning apprenticeships.

Constable Lay's name is slated to be added to the National Police Memorial in Canberra in 2027, joining the 832 individuals honored on the memorial wall, representing lives lost since 1803. Following the funeral service, a police march will proceed along Bathurst Street, commencing outside the cathedral.

Her father, Clem Lay, expressed his hope for a thorough investigation into the incident, stating, "If the investigation is done correctly and in detail, that's all I could ever ask." He also commented on the speed involved, noting that images of the damaged vehicle conveyed a sense of what might have occurred. Mr. Lay shared that his daughter had aspirations of joining the NSW Police Dog Squad, following in the footsteps of her aunt, a senior officer. He recalled his daughter's enthusiasm for her role in the force, where she had met her partner, officer Dan Vasquez. He described her as a "sporty child, blessed with athletic ability," and a person who was "always happy all the time, full of life" and "strong-willed."

Constable Lay's death has deeply affected her family, who are struggling to come to terms with the loss. Mr. Lay shared a poignant anecdote about their last conversation, just before he completed a task he had planned to show her, only to be informed of her death the following morning.
