Four days and one preseason game into training camp, the New York Islanders' younger prospects are making a strong case for roster spots, challenging established veterans. Based on Sunday's 2-1 preseason loss to the Devils, some veteran players may need to worry about securing their place on the 23-man roster.
Victor Eklund has shown he belongs, while Cole Eiserman and Kashawn Aitcheson, though unlikely to make the final roster, have impressed and demonstrated their capability.
Eiserman scored the Islanders' only goal on a power-play one-timer and expressed a desire to learn from his performance. "A few moments I thought I could learn from, but obviously that’s the game. I’m gonna be watching film and seeing what I can do," Eiserman stated after the game. He played on the second line with Matthew Highmore and Pierre Engvall, seeing increased ice time due to the team's 7:05 on the power play.
Eklund, despite being off the scoresheet, made a notable play, setting up Cal Ritchie for a prime scoring chance. Coach Pete DeBoer praised Eklund's performance, calling him "a real good hockey player" who can play in any situation. "If he continues to do what he’s doing, he’s gonna make us have to make some really tough decisions," DeBoer added.
Vladimir Dravecky, a fifth-round pick, also continued to impress, skating 18:39 and recording an assist. DeBoer noted Dravecky's significant ice time, including running the first power play, in what was likely his first professional hockey game. "Thought he did a great job. He’s had a great camp," DeBoer commented.
In contrast, Marshall Warren was on the ice for both goals against the Islanders and turned the puck over on the deciding goal scored by Connor Brown.
