A 20-year-old college football player, Tanner Hart, has died following a skateboarding accident in Washington State.
Officials reported that Hart was being towed by a golf cart at high speed on Friday night when the incident occurred. According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office, Hart lost his grip on the golf cart, and his skateboard wheel caught on something, launching him to the side of the road. He sustained a life-threatening head injury and was not wearing a helmet at the time, the Seattle Times reported.
The University of Whitworth, where Hart played football, confirmed his death. The university released a statement remembering Hart for his character and expressing condolences to his family and loved ones.
'Tanner was loved by his teammates, coaches, professors, and friends, and his loss is deeply felt throughout our athletics and campus community,' the statement read.
Hart, a native of Sumner, Washington, had also helped lead his high school to a South Puget Sound League title during his senior year. His former high school football coach, Keith Ross, described Hart as a great teammate and a caring individual who exhibited strong leadership qualities. A vigil held at the high school's football field drew over 400 attendees, a testament to the impact Hart had on many lives, according to Ross.
Social media users also shared their grief, describing Hart as a sweet and loved individual and extending their sympathies to his family and community. The cause of death has not yet been officially released.
