Two young adults from Illinois were found dead in the waters off Washington Island, Wisconsin, two days after they were reported missing during a kayaking excursion. David Thalman, 20, and his girlfriend Francesca Warick, 20, were last seen heading out on the water without life jackets.

Authorities received a report of the missing kayakers on August 1. A search operation involving the U.S. Coast Guard and local law enforcement commenced, employing water and drone surveillance. The Coast Guard suspended its search on Sunday morning, but the Door County Sheriff's Office and local police continued efforts, transitioning from a rescue to a recovery mission.

Thalman's body was located shortly before 11 a.m. on Monday, and Warick's body was recovered soon after. The sheriff's department has indicated that drowning is the suspected cause of death, though the incident remains under investigation and the official manner has not been released.

Washington Island, located off the northeast tip of the Door Peninsula, is known for its challenging waterways, which locals refer to as 'Death's Door' due to a history of over 275 shipwrecks. The area is characterized by strong currents, unpredictable winds, sandbars, and rocky shores.

The couple, originally from Dundee, Illinois, were vacationing at Thalman's family cabin on the island. Thalman's boss, Jane Lee, reported becoming concerned when she was unable to reach them and several calls went unanswered. Lee described Thalman as a driven individual who entered the real estate business after high school, aiming to build a successful career. He was promoted within a year of starting, Lee said, attributing his success to a strong work ethic.

Warick was described as a competitive cheerleader who enjoyed traveling and was attending cosmetology school with aspirations of becoming a mother. Her obituary noted her deep love for her parents, her ability to make others laugh, and her kind and joyful spirit.

Thalman's obituary highlighted his warmth and gentle strength. He had expressed to his boss his desire to build a career in real estate rather than immediately pursuing higher education. Thalman's last social media posts in December featured photos of him and Warick with the caption, 'My beautiful woman and I.'
