Yorkshire Wildlife Park Reopens After Fatal Tiger Mauling; Global Figures Condemn Sharing of Attack Footage

Yorkshire Wildlife Park is set to reopen its gates to the public on Friday, October 16, following a weekend closure after a visitor was fatally mauled by a Siberian tiger. William Chapman, 24, died on Saturday after entering the enclosure of a 200kg tiger named Altai.

Park officials have requested that visitors be understanding and respectful towards staff during this difficult period. "Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies remain with the family, friends and loved ones of William Chapman who sadly lost his life," a statement from the park read. "The safety and wellbeing of our visitors, staff team and animals remain our highest priority." The park is providing specialist trauma support for affected staff members.

Altai, the tiger involved in the incident, is reported to be safe and well, and his welfare remains a priority for the animal care team. Animal welfare consultant Tasha Lewis stated that euthanizing Altai would be unnecessary, describing the event as a "freak accident." Lewis emphasized the need for zoos to have watertight safety measures to prevent public access to animal enclosures, especially considering individuals with mental health issues.

Chapman, who had a history of significant mental health problems, including schizophrenia and psychosis, was seen dancing and pacing near the enclosure before climbing into it. Witnesses reported an attempt by an older woman to pull him back, but she was not strong enough. Zookeepers attempted to deter Altai by firing acoustic gun blasts. Despite the arrival of emergency services, Chapman was pronounced dead at the scene. His provisional cause of death was listed as multiple traumatic injuries.

Chapman's family described him as a bright and engaging young man who suffered from mental illness for several years. They expressed concerns regarding his contact with mental health services leading up to his death and are cooperating with investigations by the Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, the City of Doncaster Council, and South Yorkshire Police. The family has requested privacy and appealed for an end to the circulation of distressing media content related to the incident.

The incident drew international attention, with U.S. President Donald Trump sharing footage of the attack and later an AI-generated video of himself interacting with a tiger. South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard condemned Trump's actions, stating that the sharing of such content and the creation of mocking videos intensifies the Chapman family's pain. Downing Street acknowledged the family's concerns and emphasized the need for respect.

Investigations into the health and safety aspects of the incident are ongoing. The City of Doncaster Council, as the licensing authority, has launched a formal investigation. A full inquest into Chapman's death is scheduled for March 18 of next year. Chapman had a background in acting, appearing in ITV and BBC productions during his childhood.
