Yorba Linda High Football Program Forfeits Four Victories Amid CIF Rule Violations

The Yorba Linda High School football program has been forced to forfeit four of its victories this season due to violations of California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) rules. The infractions involved administrative oversight and undue influence, according to reporting by Dan Albano of The Orange County Register.

As a result of the forfeitures, the Mustangs will enter their upcoming Alpha League matchup against San Clemente with an official record of 0-5, despite having initially secured wins against Laguna Beach, Long Beach Poly, El Dorado, and Esperanza. The team suffered its first on-field loss to Huntington Beach on September 18, with a final score of 29-25.

The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District confirmed that the CIF-Southern Section made the determination regarding the violations on Tuesday. A statement released by the district indicated that the investigation uncovered deficiencies over time in eligibility verification, communication between coaches and athletic administration, and participation clearance. The violations reportedly involved more than one student and multiple incidents.

Albano's report specified that the CIF-Southern Section found Yorba Linda in violation of bylaws 503 B(1) and 510. Bylaw 503 B(1) addresses the failure of school administration to submit proper transfer eligibility paperwork in a timely manner, which could have prevented an ineligible student from competing had it been processed correctly. Bylaw 510 prohibits using sports as a primary reason for a student to enroll in or transfer to a new school, defining "undue influence" as any act intended to encourage enrollment for athletic purposes.

The school and district have reportedly taken steps to ensure the program's ongoing eligibility for league games and CIF-SS competition. With five remaining games on the schedule, including matchups against strong opponents like Mission Viejo and San Juan Hills, the Mustangs must achieve a .300 winning percentage to qualify for the CIF-SS playoffs.
