Yemeni Forces Accused of War Crimes Amid Bab el-Mandeb Offensive

Disturbing video footage published by Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces on Monday appears to show armored vehicles running over Houthi fighters during an offensive to recapture territory near the vital Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The footage, reportedly captured during the final stages of a battle for the coastal area, depicts both armed and unarmed individuals being driven over on a sandy shore.

The Houthi movement has condemned the video as evidence of war crimes. Government and coalition officials had not yet issued a response as of Monday. However, a key military faction within the government forces subsequently released directives urging troops to properly treat prisoners.

The offensive aims to secure control of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial chokepoint for international shipping located between the Horn of Africa and Yemen. The area has been a focal point of the ongoing conflict in Yemen.
